KINGS COUNTY, NS – A group of Kings County residents are unhappy with the decision by the McNeil government to cut the Grade 6 Kings County Academy instrumental music program.
Progressive Conservative MLA for Kings North John Lohr presented two petitions in the Legislature on October 20. The petitions requested that Premier Stephen McNeil and Minister of Education Karen Casey intervene on its behalf to have the program reinstated.
Lohr says that since its inception, the program has been successful and is supported by the community and parents.
“Instrumental music taught early is key to improving literacy and mathematics outcomes, team work and inclusion,” Lohr said. “ My own children benefited immensely from this program and I would like to see the town’s tradition of exceeding expectations in the area of creative arts in school to continue.”
The petitions contained two parts; one signed 183 by parents and teachers, and the other with 44 youth signatures.
