HALIFAX, NS – Sydney River-Mira-Louisbourg MLA Alfie MacLeod pressured the McNeil Liberals to help the homeowners who lost their homes in the Thanksgiving flood in the House of Assembly this week.
During question period on Friday morning, MacLeod questioned the Minister of Emergency Management Office about why the government assistance process has been so slow and unclear.
“Families who lost everything need our support now more than ever. The government has a responsibility to reassure these people and support them in any way possible” says Macleod. “The colder weather has arrived and Christmas is next month. These people deserve to know when they’ll receive funding so they can start rebuilding their lives.”
MacLeod wants the government to take a more direct approach with the families and contact them directly to explain the government’s plan.
The Minister said he’s working through the paperwork but didn’t have a clear timeline on when the money would start flowing. Earlier in the week, it was reported that families who were living in hotels paid by donations would have to find alternative accommodations. The Minister said no one should be under any pressure to move out of any hotel.
