Transport industry deserves answers

March 21, 2016

ARGYLE, NS – Progressive Conservative MLA for Argyle-Barrington Chris d’Entremont wants Minister Geoff MacLellan to confirm the Yarmouth ferry being considered will accommodate transport trucks.

“The Liberal government should tell the trucking industry today if the ferry being considered will take trucks or not,” says d’Entremont. “The local truckers are putting together their summer transportation plans and deserve answers. Moving goods to market is vital for the Southwest economy. The Liberal government should just tell everyone the truth.”

d’Entremont first raised this issue back in January when rumours surfaced that a catamaran-style ferry was being considered. As it stands, there still has not been an announcement about a boat for the 2016 season or answers from the Liberal government about whether trucks are part of their ferry plan.

Brian Reynolds, owner of B. Reynolds Trucking in Port Latour, is increasingly concerned that trucks are not going to be allowed on the ferry.

“This ferry announcement is as important to our industry as it is for the tourism industry,” says Mr. Reynolds. “If the ferry being considered will not take trucks, we will have a very serious problem in Southwest Nova.”

d’Entremont has been calling for a long-term plan for the Yarmouth Ferry service.

“We need a long-term plan for this ferry service that will help rebuild the economy in South West Nova, while protecting taxpayers,” says d’Entremont. “It’s hard for everyone to remain positive and hopeful when the Liberals keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again.”
